One of the best gifts we received these strange and unprecedented Christmas 2020 was definitely the agreement between the European Union and United Kingdom.

Lately, there were strong rumors that an agreement was not possible and I am really wondering:
How is it possible that the EU and a country that has been fundamental in the creation of the European Union cannot reach a mutual agreement?

How is it possible that a consensus cannot be achieved between the EU and a country that even tried to save the whole Europe during the
aftermath of WWII?

A country that initiated the European Coal and Steel Community foundation
as a way to prevent further war?

One of Europe’s nuclear super powers; a country with history,
civilization, industry, maritime power and so much more cannot find common ground with the EU, when the latter can even make agreements with countries outside the Union, for example Turkey?

Especially when it comes to the relations of the UK with Greece, it is a country that has been on our side through history.
We are also talking about a nation that has been the founding stone for the development of tourism in our country. Thousands of citizens from the UK have been coming to Greece for decades, putting our country to the top of the destinations list and praise the beauties of our islands.

Here in Greece, we would like the UK to stay in the EU; however, since its own citizens chose to exit, we are still wishing that the UK will stand next to the EU and not against it.
We salute the new agreement and hope for a harmonious collaboration between the EU and our friends in the UK.
Greece will always be an “open house” for our friends, offering our famous hospitality.
